St. Dorothy and the Basket

14th century
Fresco
Church of St. Matthew, Murau, Styria, Austria

The inscription in the upper left corner identifies the child as "Jesus Christ." In the legend he is said to be "barefoot, clothed in purple, with crisp [="curly"] hairs, whose garment was set full of bright stars." This image gets everything but the purple. Dorothy is telling him to take the basket of roses and apples to the scribe Theophilus. Her hand holds a stalk bearing both apples and roses.
